The channel beam or C-beam is a type of structural steel used in the construction of buildings and civil engineering. When you look at the channel beam it looks like the letter C. A tapered channel's ends narrow whereas the non-tapered channel's ends are the size of the steel it is formed from, having squared off edges. The C-beam or channel beam is known to been welded back to back to create I-Beams.

The first number is the depth in inches and the second is the weight in pounds per foot: C 6 × 8.2 is 6" deep and weighs 8.2 lb/ft. MC channel sizes read the same way.
