A stainless steel butt weld cap is a type of pipe fitting that covers the end of a pipe. Since it can have female threads, it can screw on to the male end of the pipe. It can also be welded on to close the end of the pipe. On a weld, if it is a temporary close, or the contractor wants to add to the piping system in the future, he or she should allow additional pipe before closing so the pipe cap can be cut off and the pipe system extended as needed. What do E and S mean in the cap chart?
E is the length of the cap from the welding end, and S is the tangent length, the straight portion before the cap begins to curve. A 4" cap in the first chart measures 2-1/2" (E) with a 1.26" tangent length. The second chart lists two lengths, E and E1, as our data sheet does; ask us which applies to the cap you need.
How much does a butt weld cap weigh?
It depends on the size and schedule. The charts on this page list approximate weights: a 4" cap weighs about 1.44 lb in Schedule 10S and 2.69 lb in Schedule 40S.
