What is the difference between tapered and non-tapered beams?
A tapered beam's flanges narrow, or taper, at the end. A non-tapered beam's flanges are the full size of the steel it is formed from, with squared-off edges.
What do the numbers in a size like W8 × 18 mean?
The first number is the depth in inches and the second is the weight in pounds per foot: W8 × 18 is an 8" beam weighing 18 lb/ft. S beam sizes read the same way.
